April 22, 2009, in Foreclosure

My husband and I were victims of a real estate scam.In exchange for the use of our credit to purchase homes in our names, we were given cash and promises that our credit would be made better as a result and the homes would be sold after a year. This didn't happen, of course. The scammers, in cahoots with the mortgage lenders, bankers, etc., managed to get us approved for homes we never occupied, nor could afford. All went into forclosure. There were a total of about 8 homes. This happened in 2001 and 2002. Only one company sued us and we settled out of court for a great amount of money. My Husband died in 2005. My question is, how long is the statute of limitations on the other properties? I received a phone call yesterday from some agency stating there was a check written in my name from 4 years ago and they needed to clear the books....sounded like one of the places that puts notices in newspapers about unclaimed "cash" when unable to locate a person; and his call was to advise me of this so that it could be resent to me. I'm not sure if this is a possible way for them to now get in touch with me. I am also thinking that since I had to pay all the monies I paid to be rid of the "One" company suing us, that I could really use the money. I don't want to open a new can of worms, so to say, though
