Hello,

I purchased my house in September of 2005. As I had lived in the house for a year and a half I felt I knew the house well enough and agreed to purchase "AS IS". I purchased the house it was listed as 1800 sq ft. The house in 2000 sq ft. I need to do some electrical work and roofing. In surveying the work I want to get the addition plans before proceeding. Apparently there was never a permit pulled to do the addition. The work apparently was performed by the owner previous to the party I purchased the house from. My question is, do I have legal recourse to either of the last two owners to correct the mistakes made in the addition?

I understand that I signed as "AS IS" in purchasing the house, but for me it was that the house was in good repair and that all work and repairs had been done to code. Which they have not.

Thank you for your time

Sorry to hear about this... This is a tricky one as you stated the owners you purchased from were not aware of the addition having been constructed without a permit. I would highly recommend you consult with an Attorney SPECIALIZING in Real Estate transactions as soon as possible as alerting the local officials to the existing addition could trigger a whole host of actions by the local building officials. Please let us know if you need a recommendation for an attorney in you local market and we'll try to help.
